Omah Lay was born in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt to a musical family. Until 1976, his grandfather worked as a percussionist for Celestine Ukwu, the famed Highlife vocalist. His father took up drumming as well, though not to the same extent as his father, but he was a local hero.
